The Youth Support Officer (YSO) is here to support students’ wellbeing, engagement, and success at school — both in and out of the classroom.
The YSO works alongside students in a friendly, supportive, and practical way to help them navigate the ups and downs of school life. This includes supporting students with friendships, confidence, emotions, attendance, motivation, behaviour, and any challenges that may be getting in the way of learning.
Support is tailored to each student and focuses on helping them feel safe, connected, and confident at school.
The Youth Support Officer works closely with families and as part of the school wellbeing team, including the Guidance Officers, Year Level Co-Ordinators, Chaplain, Defence Mentor, the School-based Youth Health Nurse and CEC.
How the Youth Support Officer supports students:
Works one-on-one and in small groups with students who may need extra support with wellbeing, behaviour, attendance, or engagement at school.
Supports students with friendships, peer issues, confidence, emotional regulation, anxiety, motivation, and resilience.
Helps students who may be feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or at risk of disengaging from school.
Provides mentoring, encouragement, advocacy, and practical support.
Works with families to identify any barriers to learning and wellbeing and helps connect them with the right supports at school or in the community.
Refers students and families to outside services when needed and supports them to access those services.
Programs and activities:
The Youth Support Officer also works with students through a range of supportive programs, including:
Blurred Minds Program – supporting students to make healthy and informed choices around vaping and alcohol.
BRAVE Program – supporting students who experience anxiety and worry.
Breakfast Club – run each week alongside Chaplain Hannah, providing a welcoming and supportive space for students to start their day.
